Attention Dave Whitton-Chair
Dave Whitton (Board Chair) – Chair:
Born in the UK, Dave came to Canada in 1968, and lived in Montreal until 2005. He worked on an International business development team which partnered with governments, space agencies, the science community and industry in the development of systems for the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Dave retired in 2002 and moved to the Okanagan where he continued with his passion for hiking, the conservation of wild life, and the unique natural environment of the South Okanagan. Dave has been a volunteer for SORCO since 2009 and Chair since 2013. Email
Karen Yuen – Treasurer: Originally from Vancouver, Karen worked for over 15 years with a major financial institution, serving as Treasurer for HelpDesk BC. Prior to retiring, Karen managed an IT team that provided Internet support to K-12 and Post Secondary Institutions in BC. Since 1989, she has served in numerous capacities for advisory boards that include BCIT, VCC, Langara, Help Desk Institute, Canadian Support Industry and Women in Technology. Karen also volunteered with Fraser Valley Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation, OWL, SPCA, Delta Humane Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Since relocating to the Okanagan, she currently volunteers with SORCO, Okanagan Chinese Canadian Association, Canadian Airlines Retiree group, and fosters for the Western Canada Belgian Rescue.
Cole Ferencz: Cole Ferencz has a a Bachelor of Arts Degree Major in Criminal Justice from the University of the Fraser Valley and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Manitoba. As a student he has several years of experience in various fields of Law. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe, visited Israel, and experienced many species of wildlife in Malaysian Borneo.
Cole has a passion for wildlife, and brings his unique talents to SORCO.
Gayle Lunn – Communications: Originally based in Toronto, Gayle has over 20 years’ experience in marketing, advertising and research for clients including Unilever, TELUS and Molson. She is an avid wildlife supporter, having volunteered her time with the Toronto Wildlife Centre and local birding groups. Since moving to the Okanagan, Gayle now runs a national research and strategy consultancy while volunteering as an Adoption Host with the Kelowna BCSPCA. She is inspired to raise awareness and engage the public in education and conservation issues.
Jane Stead: Jane holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Simon Fraser University and teaching credentials from the University of Victoria. She spent many years in the field of public relations before undertaking a career as a secondary school teacher. She has been involved in many initiatives developed to improve and enhance the learning experience for students including a humanitarian trip to Tanzania. She has been involved in a variety of volunteer organizations over the years and is excited for the opportunity to contribute her skills and time to the protection of wildlife and the environment.
Dean Stevenson: Dean moved to the Okanagan from Alberta in 2004 after retiring as Director of Occupational Health & Safety and Technical Training for FortisBC. He was an Electrical Engineering Technologist and Journeyman Powerline Technician. He Chaired the Fortis Operating Group Safety Committee, and served as Chair of the EnviroPartners Energy Efficiency initiative for the Banff National Park. Throughout his career he was involved in customer service, regulatory, financial, administrative, technical, human resources, environment, and safety fields.
He has served in various volunteer capacities including Governor of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, President and General Manager of the Canmore Eagles Junior Hockey Club and President of the Canmore Curling Club.
Eve Wegsheidler – Education: Eve Wegscheidler is proud to call the Okanagan home as she has lived here all her life. That’s probably reason enough for having such a strong commitment to the preservation of the natural environment in the valley. As well, though, Eve is employed as Education/Recreation Coordinator for Regional Parks at the RDCO in Kelowna, and has a background in Early Childhood Education and local government. No doubt, her varied experiences will be a useful skillset as a SORCO Board member.
