This owl is totally nocturnal and lives only in dense old growth forests of the west coast. It preys on flying squirrels, wood rats, mice, bats, insects and birds. Call is a series of three or four dog like barks and hoots. Nests high in dens coniferous rain forests. Non-migratory.
