Total length 56-69 cm or 22-27 in. Wing span 154 cm or 60 in. This large white owl is a little shorter than the Grey Gray but weighs almost twice as much. Deep yellow eyes contrast the small portion of black beak that shows on the birds face. Head is smooth with no ear tufts. Feathers are thick and dense. Females and immature birds have more markings than males who can be pure white. This owl breeds on the rolling frozen Arctic tundra and migrates south through B.C. in early winter. Diet consists of muskrats and hare, game birds, water fowl and rodents. Actively hunt during the day and at night. Owls are fairly silent except for a harsh barking call on the breeding grounds.
