Total length 19-23 cm or 7.5-9 in. Wing span 56 cm or 22 in. Small full bodied owl with yellow eyes. Young are chocolate brown and acquire the white spots and paler facial disk as they mature. Strictly a nocturnal hunter and a vagrant migrant. Preys on a variety of insects, rodents and song birds. Call sounds like a high pitched bell “ting-ting-ting”. Prefers tree cavities to nest in. Prefers dense northern forests and higher elevations on interior mountains. Can be approached easily in the wild.
