Total length 40-60cm or 16-24in. Wing span 112cm or 44in. A chunky bird with a smooth round head,large dark eyes and yellow bill. Brown mottled feathers with white markings and “Bars” of brown running down chest. Males and females look the same. An aggressive hunter that will take fish, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, song birds and even other owl species. Will not tolerate other owls in its territory, often kills Spotted Owls. Will hunt during the daytime but usually at dawn and dusk. Common in dense woodlands. Returns yearly to old nest site in tree cavities, mistletoe spreads, old hawk nests. Non-migratory. Calls are rhythmic hoots that sound like “Who-cooks-for you-all”, and a drawn out “Hoo-ah.” Will also bark, squawk and clack its beak.
